Spiritual Blockage: How to Recognize and Overcome the Spiritual Hurdles that Hold You Back

For those who have been following my blog, you know that my articles are mostly informative. However, today, I am drawn to share a more personal side of my journey – my encounter with spiritual blockages. As a Reiki Master with a spiritual foundation in Christianity, my journey involves a unique blend of spiritual practices, and yet, I, too, have faced moments of doubt and disconnection.

It’s common to fall into the trap of over-analyzing and doubting our personal experiences with the divine. Additionally, feelings of anger and disappointment with the trajectory of our lives can lead to a sense that our prayers have not been answered as we had hoped. I want to share a piece of my journey through these spiritual hurdles to help you understand that experiencing doubt and even anger on our spiritual path is not only okay but completely normal at times.

In my early 40s, I experienced a profound moment of loss when my wife died of cancer. This loss created a deep spiritual blockage for me, causing me to analyze all of my beliefs. It was a challenging period, filled with struggles and doubts. However, through the Divine’s grace, and the help of spiritual leaders and friends, I not only overcame these struggles and doubts but also gained a much deeper understanding of pain and hurt.

Missing a loved one who has passed away

This experience led me to seek God on a much deeper level and helped me receive the Spiritual Gift of Laying on of Hands, which manifested itself to me as Reiki. This journey of healing and self-discovery has profoundly influenced my spiritual path and my desire to support others on their own journeys.

It is my heart’s desire for everyone to experience the love of the divine and to grow on their spiritual journey. Writing articles like this is one way I hope to support others on their path. Just as I have navigated through moments of deep pain and doubt to find a stronger connection with God and a deeper understanding of myself, I believe that everyone has the potential to overcome their own spiritual blockages and find a deeper sense of purpose and connection.

As we dive into this article, my hope is that the insights and strategies shared will resonate with you, provide comfort, and support you as you navigate your own spiritual journey. Remember, doubt and struggle are a part of the journey, but with compassion, self-reflection, and support, we can overcome them and grow closer to the divine.

What is a Spiritual Blockage

Many of us are familiar with the term ‘blockage’ in a physical or mental sense, but a spiritual blockage is something entirely different, yet deeply connected. A spiritual blockage is an obstacle or barrier on our spiritual path, preventing us from connecting with the divine, our higher self, or the energy around us. As a Reiki Master and spirituality junkie, I understand the importance of maintaining a clear and open channel to the divine. However, life events, past traumas, and even our own doubts and fears can create blockages that hinder our spiritual growth and well-being.

In my experience, a spiritual blockage can manifest as a feeling of disconnection from God, the universe, or the energy that surrounds us. It can lead to a lack of motivation to engage in spiritual practices, a sense of hopelessness, or even a questioning of our faith or beliefs. It is essential to recognize that these feelings are normal and that many people experience them at various points in their spiritual journey. Acknowledging the presence of a spiritual blockage is the first step towards healing and reconnecting with the divine.

Now let us dive into a few things that can create Spiritual Blockages in a person’s life.

Doubting God/The Divine

It is a topic that many of us find difficult to discuss openly – doubting God. Yet, it is an experience that many, including myself, have faced at some point in our spiritual journey. Doubting God does not make us any less faithful or devoted; rather, it is a sign that we are engaging deeply with our beliefs and trying to understand them better. It is natural to question why certain things happen in our lives, especially when we face challenges and hardships, such as the death of a spouse at a young age.

Does God Really Care about my circumstances

These moments of doubt can lead to spiritual blockages, as we struggle to reconcile our faith with the reality of our circumstances. It is crucial to approach these doubts with compassion and a willingness to explore them rather than suppress them. Remember, it is through questioning that we grow and deepen our connection with the divine.

Doubting Self

Doubting oneself is another common cause of spiritual blockage. This can manifest as doubting our abilities, our worth, or even the validity of our past experiences. For example, as a Reiki Master, there have been moments when I doubted my ability to channel energy and facilitate healing for others. These doubts can create a barrier that prevents us from fully engaging with our spiritual practices and can lead to a sense of disconnection from the divine.

It is important to remember that self-doubt is a natural and common experience. However, it is crucial to address these doubts and work through them to remove the blockages they create. Practicing self-compassion and seeking support from trusted friends, mentors, or professionals can be incredibly helpful in overcoming self-doubt and reconnecting with our spiritual selves.

Doubting Other Spiritual People

Many of us have heard someone say they don’t go to organized religious gatherings because so many of that faiths followers are hypocrites. This skepticism towards fellow spiritual individuals can create a spiritual blockage for someone. It can give rise to doubts about their own abilities, worthiness, and the authenticity of their past spiritual experiences. This doubt acts as a barrier, hindering their full engagement with spiritual practices and causing a sense of disconnection from the divine. Overcoming this blockage requires addressing and working through these doubts, practicing self-compassion, and seeking support from trusted friends, mentors, or professionals.

Signs of Spiritual Blockage

Recognizing the signs of spiritual blockage is the first step towards healing and reconnection. It is crucial to be aware of these signs as they can manifest in various aspects of our lives, often subtly and gradually. Here are some common signs of spiritual blockage:

  1. Depression: A persistent feeling of sadness, hopelessness, or lack of interest in activities that once brought joy can indicate a spiritual blockage. Depression affects not only our mental well-being but also our spiritual self, as it creates a barrier that disconnects us from the divine and the world around us.
  2. Lack of Motivation: A sudden or gradual decline in motivation to engage in spiritual practices, self-care, or even daily activities can be a sign of spiritual blockage. When we feel disconnected from our spiritual selves, it can be challenging to find the motivation to engage in activities that nourish our soul.
  3. Feeling Isolated: Feeling isolated or disconnected from others, even when surrounded by friends and family, can indicate a spiritual blockage. A sense of isolation can stem from a disconnection from the divine, leading to feelings of loneliness and detachment from the world around us.
  4. Doubting Beliefs: As discussed earlier, doubting one’s beliefs or faith can be a sign of spiritual blockage. It is normal to question our beliefs, but persistent doubt that leads to a sense of disconnection from the divine can indicate a blockage that needs addressing.
  5. Physical Discomfort: Spiritual blockages can also manifest as physical discomfort or pain. Our bodies and spirits are deeply connected, and a blockage in our spiritual energy can lead to physical symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, or unexplained aches and pains.
  6. Anxiety: Persistent feelings of anxiety or worry can indicate a spiritual blockage. Anxiety can create a barrier that prevents us from connecting with the divine and trusting in the flow of life.

It is important to remember that experiencing one or more of these signs does not necessarily mean you have a spiritual blockage. However, if you find that these signs resonate with you and are affecting your spiritual journey, it may be worth exploring further and seeking support if necessary.

Spiritual Stumbling Blocks

As we navigate our spiritual journey, we may encounter various stumbling blocks that can lead to spiritual blockages. These stumbling blocks are often deeply ingrained patterns of behavior or ways of thinking that can hinder our spiritual growth and connection with the divine. Here are some common spiritual stumbling blocks:

  1. Pride: Pride can manifest as an inflated sense of self-importance or a refusal to acknowledge our shortcomings. It can prevent us from seeking help when needed and can create a barrier between ourselves and others, as well as between ourselves and the divine.
  2. Unforgiveness: Holding onto past hurts and grievances can create a heavy burden that weighs us down spiritually. Unforgiveness can lead to feelings of resentment and bitterness, which can block the flow of positive energy and create a barrier to our spiritual growth.
  3. Doubt: As mentioned earlier, doubt is a natural part of our spiritual journey. However, persistent doubt that leads to a lack of trust in ourselves, others, or the divine can become a significant stumbling block.
  4. Fear: Fear, whether it be of the unknown, failure, or even success, can paralyze us and prevent us from moving forward on our spiritual path.
  5. Negative Self-Talk: The way we talk to ourselves matters. Negative self-talk can erode our self-confidence and create a barrier to our spiritual growth and well-being.

It is important to approach these stumbling blocks with compassion and a willingness to work through them. Remember, it is okay to falter in your spiritual journey; we are all human and always growing and learning. Be kind to yourself and remember that each stumbling block is an opportunity for growth and deeper connection with the divine.

Moreover, it is crucial to recognize that many religions and spiritual practices believe the divine is guided by love. This loving nature is forgiving and desires to have a relationship with us. When we stumble, it is not a signal to retreat from our spiritual journey out of shame or fear, but rather an invitation to lean into the divine’s loving, forgiving nature. By approaching our stumbling blocks with a heart open to forgiveness, love, and growth, we can transform our obstacles into opportunities for deepening our connection with the divine and ourselves.

Energy Blocks

Another important aspect of spiritual blockage is energy blocks. Our bodies are made up of energy centers, known as chakras, which play a crucial role in our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. There are seven main chakras, each associated with specific organs and aspects of our lives. When these chakras are in alignment and open, energy can flow freely, supporting our overall health and well-being. However, when one or more chakras are blocked or out of alignment, it can lead to energy blocks, which can, in turn, create spiritual blockages.

For example, the heart chakra, located in the center of the chest, is associated with love, compassion, and acceptance. When this chakra is blocked, it can lead to feelings of isolation, jealousy, or an inability to forgive, all of which can create a barrier to our spiritual growth and connection with the divine. Similarly, the third eye chakra, located in the forehead, is associated with intuition, wisdom, and insight. A blockage in this chakra can lead to feelings of doubt, indecision, and a lack of trust in ourselves and the divine.

It is important to regularly assess and balance our chakras to ensure that energy can flow freely and support our spiritual journey. There are various practices and techniques, such as meditation, yoga, and energy healing, that can help to clear energy blocks and align the chakras. As a Reiki Master, I have found energy healing to be particularly effective in clearing energy blocks and supporting overall well-being. Remember, addressing energy blocks is an important part of maintaining a strong and healthy connection with the divine.

Who Can Help With Spiritual Blockage

Navigating spiritual blockages can often feel overwhelming and isolating, but it is important to remember that there are resources and support available. Here are some individuals and practices that can help with spiritual blockage:

  1. Pastors and Priests: As spiritual leaders, pastors and priests can provide guidance, support, and a listening ear as you navigate your spiritual journey. They can help you explore any doubts or questions you may have and provide a perspective grounded in faith and scripture.
  2. Spiritual Gurus: Spiritual gurus or mentors can provide guidance and support from a broader spiritual perspective. They can help you explore your beliefs, practices, and experiences and provide insight and guidance on how to navigate any challenges you may be facing.
  3. Energy Healers: Energy healers, such as Reiki practitioners, can help address energy blocks that may be contributing to spiritual blockages. They can help clear and balance your chakras and energy field, supporting your overall well-being and spiritual growth.
  4. Self-Help: We also have an incredible ability to work on ourselves. Through practices such as meditation, prayer, and the study of various scriptures and sacred texts, we can gain insight into the nature of our blockages and work towards clearing them. Remember, it is okay to seek help, but it is also important to take responsibility for our own spiritual growth and well-being.
Seeking help from a others

It is important to find the support that resonates with you and your beliefs. Remember, it is okay to seek help, and it is a sign of strength, not weakness. Ultimately, addressing and overcoming spiritual blockages is a deeply personal journey, but it is one that can be supported and enriched by the guidance and support of others.

Created in the Image of God

A fundamental belief in many religious and spiritual traditions, is that we are created in the image of God or the divine. This means that we possess qualities and abilities that reflect the nature of the divine, such as the ability to reason, question, love, and create. These abilities are not given to us by accident; they are an integral part of our nature and purpose.

The ability to reason and question things is a gift that allows us to explore the world around us, seek understanding, and grow in our faith and spirituality. It is through questioning and seeking that we deepen our connection with the divine and grow in our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. Moreover, our capacity for love and compassion reflects the loving nature of the divine and calls us to be loving towards all living things.

It is important to approach our spiritual journey with a sense of curiosity and a willingness to explore and question. It is through this process of exploration and questioning that we can uncover and address any spiritual blockages that may be hindering our growth and connection with the divine. Remember, the divine desires for us to grow, to be strong, and to be loving. Embracing our abilities to reason, question, and love is a crucial part of this journey.

Navigating the journey of spirituality is a deeply personal experience, yet it is important to remember the timeless words of John Donne, “No man is an island.” We are all connected, not only to each other but also to the divine. When we encounter doubts and struggles, it is crucial to remember that we are not alone. Whether it be through the support of pastors, spiritual gurus, energy healers, or our own self-help practices, there are resources available to help us navigate and overcome spiritual blockages.

You are not Alone

Moreover, it is important to approach our journey with compassion and a willingness to explore and grow. Spiritual blockages are a common part of the journey, and addressing them is an opportunity for growth and deepening our connection with the divine. Remember, we are created in the image of God, with the ability to reason, question, and love. Embracing these abilities is a crucial part of navigating our spiritual journey and overcoming any obstacles we may encounter.

Ultimately, the journey of spirituality is one of growth, love, and connection. By addressing and overcoming spiritual blockages, we can deepen our connection with the divine and ourselves, and move forward on our journey with a sense of strength, purpose, and love.
